Warm, not too deep, with wonderful sandy beaches, the lake is located two km from Baikal. Its length is 16 km, and the largest width is 7.5 km. Therefore, perhaps, before it was called Lake – Knife. The Kotochik River flowing out of Kotokel changes the direction of the flow twice a year. There is Monastyrskiy island on the lake. It has such name due to there was a monastery of the Holy Trinity Selenginsky Monastery and the church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in the 18-19 centuries. The island is rich in vegetation and berries, and the lake is replete with fish. Therefore, there are a lot of rest and guest houses around Kotokel.
